Warehouse Safety

Move pallets, not people.

Warehouse package balances forklift traffic management, racking load notices, fire safety and emergency wayfinding.

Why this matters — Forklifts alone cause ~85 fatalities and 34,900 serious injuries every year globally (OSHA / EHS data).

The business problem

High-density racking, forklifts and goods-in/out flows create constant collision and falling-object risk.

International & Indian standards that apply

These are the codes an auditor, fire marshal or safety officer will check against.

StandardRequirement
ISO 7010Standard pictograms for forklift, pedestrian, falling load, and racking hazards.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176Powered-industrial-truck operating areas must be marked; aisles and passageways kept clear and signposted.
NFPA 13 / NFPA 101Sprinkler-clearance signage (typ. 18" below deflectors) and clearly marked egress routes in high-pile storage.
IS 9457Racking load-limit boards and hazard signage in the BIS-approved colour system.

Zone-by-zone signage plan

Dock doors

Manage vehicle / pedestrian collision points.

  • Reflective dock number
  • Stop when red
  • Reverse warning
  • No entry when loading
Aisles & racking

Communicate load and speed limits.

  • Aisle number
  • Max rack load kg/level
  • Forklift speed limit
  • Pedestrian pathway
High-pile storage

Maintain sprinkler clearance and hazard awareness.

  • Max stack height
  • 18" sprinkler clearance
  • No storage above line
Charging area

Battery and electrical safety.

  • Battery charging area
  • No smoking
  • Wear eye + hand protection
  • Eye-wash location
Emergency egress

Keep exits findable through tall racks.

  • Overhead exit signs (2.5 m)
  • Photoluminescent escape route
  • Assembly point

Mandatory signage checklist

Colour and shape follow ISO 7010 / IS 9457. Each row is a distinct sign type your site must carry.

Material & mounting guidance

  • Retro-reflective ACP for dock doors and aisle-end signs — visible under forklift LED.
  • Overhead flag signs at every 6th rack bay so exits stay visible above stock.
  • Yellow / black anti-slip floor tape for pedestrian walkways; white for storage boundaries.
  • Battery charging area needs eye-wash within 10 s travel time (ANSI Z358.1).

Common audit failures

Exit signs mounted at door-frame height — hidden by pallet racking within a week of go-live.
Rack load limits missing on new racking installations — a top FM Global audit finding.
Forklift and pedestrian sharing the same unmarked aisle.
Sprinkler clearance line painted on the floor but no ceiling signage.
