Fire Safety

Lead people out — fast and certain.

Photoluminescent and reflective fire safety signage — extinguishers, alarms, hydrants, exits and assembly points — aligned to NFPA and IS standards.

Why this matters — In a fire, visibility drops below 3 metres within 4 minutes. Photoluminescent signage stays visible for at least 90 minutes after power loss.

The business problem

Fire equipment must be findable in smoke, low light or panic. Standard text-only signs fail under those conditions.

International & Indian standards that apply

These are the codes an auditor, fire marshal or safety officer will check against.

StandardRequirement
NFPA 170Standard symbols for fire safety, emergency and associated hazards used on plans, signs and maps.
NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code)
Ch. 7
Exit signs illuminated or photoluminescent; visible from any point in the exit access; max 100 ft spacing.
NBC 2016 Part 4
Fire & Life Safety
Indian National Building Code — mandatory exit, refuge and fire equipment signage for all buildings > 15 m.
ISO 7010Green square for safe condition (exits, first aid) and red square for fire equipment (extinguishers, alarms).
IS 9457Bureau of Indian Standards signage colours; adopted by CFO / State Fire Services.

Material & mounting guidance

  • Photoluminescent (glow) film — minimum 90 min afterglow at 0.32 mcd/m² per DIN 67510.
  • Exit signs mounted 2.0–2.5 m AFL, visible from any point in the exit access.
  • Fire equipment signs at 2.0 m centred above the equipment.
  • Assembly point signs on independent poles at 3 m height, visible from 30 m.

Common audit failures

Battery-backed LED exits with dead batteries — photoluminescent is fail-safe.
Exit signs pointing 'up' at a stairwell with no landing sign at the next floor.
Missing 'Class of Fire' labels on extinguishers (A / B / C / K).
Refuge area sign missing from buildings > 15 m (NBC 2016 non-conformance).
